Reach Out and Read Print E-mail

Reach Out and ReadSpring is here! and along with that come garage sales. We will soon be seeing them in every neighborhood and on every corner. I would like to remind you that we are collecting gently used kids' books for the Reach Out and Read program through Riley Hospital and this is a great place to find them at a very reasonable price.

You can bring them to:

  • District Convention in Saturday August 15, 2009 the Adam's Mark Hotel
  • If someone is coming to Indianapolis, they can be dropped off at the District office at 8060 Knue Road, Suite 127 (call before dropping off)
  • If you have quite a few books and live in the Indianapolis area, please call me (317-557-5478) and we will make arrangements to have them picked up.

Each of us can make a difference in a child's life by doing something as simple as providing a book. I hope you will help us reach our committment of 1,000 books for the Kids in the Indiana District.

Marge Crouch, District Chair
Reach Out and Read Program

Riley Parent Treasure Chest Print E-mail

We all agree that making the stay for children at Riley Hospital the very best is always first and foremost in our thoughts and actions.  We do, however, empathize with the situations that parents find themselves in when staying with their child at Riley for any period of time.  The Parent Treasure chest will be manned by Kiwanis Volunteers and will go throughout the hospital providing comfort items to parents that may need a listening ear, just a kind pick-up, or a personal item to make themselves feel just a little bit better about confronting the next moment with their child.  We are asking your support to provide items to stock the Parent Treasure Chest.  Our first collection for items will be at the 2009 Mid Year Conference.  Please encourage your clubs to bring items to help with this new “find” that we have adopted!  After the Mid Year Conference send items to the District Office.  Continue to check this website for updated lists for “items needed” for the parent cart.

Post-Tribune correspondent

Merrillville, IN, August 22, 2008– As a high school teacher, Barbara Koby’s focus was always on her students.

Although Koby, a Crown Point resident, is retired now from the Merrillville school system, her focus has not changed.

Her work with the Merrillville Noon Kiwanis Club attests to this.

In April, 2007, Club members personally distributed 544 dictionaries to 26 classrooms in the Merrillville Community Schools and Aquinas School.

Dictionaries will again be given to all third grade students this year. The Merrillville Kiwanis Clubs plan to make this an annual project for many years to come!
